Wastewater treatment in an Company with advanced demands to the waterquality

The result of the northsea conference 1987 in London was the 50% reduction of dangerous and nutritive substances till 1995. To reach that aim the wastewater treatments which uses the river Elbe got advanced demands. In our case the company could also use the huge treatmentplant of Hamburg and so we are in an direct competition of that plant. After several conferences with the customer and the waterauthority we began the planning. The treatmentplant include also remove nitrogen and phosphor in the biological stage (not only with chemicals). Another difficulty was that we only had an small area between the dam to the Elbe with a street along and the office houses. So we had to plan a very compact treatmentplant. To avoid bad smells the plant was completly housed. As in other factories we also had the Problem that on weekends and during the holidays nearly no water is coming to the plant. The sewage system colected the waste water in one system on rainwater in an other. While the big area is flat several pumpstations further the water. So we plan a system with sieverake and cascaded activated sludge tanks with pre-denitrification and enhanced biological phosphorus removal. The sludge treatment was realized aerobic thermophilic in an separate tank. To get better in the subject we also installed a computer for processcontrol. The influent-concentrations are superior to municipal wastewater which is be conditioned by the separate system of transportation without infiltration water. For example the influent-concentrations of the COD are about 1200 mg/l, the NH4-N about 110 mg/l and the total phosphorus Ptot about 22 mg/l. The results we get in the plant are presented in the conference.
